About Danebod

The Danebod Family Camps (pronounced don ‘ah bo or dan ‘ah bo) have met since 1948 under the leadership of the campers themselves. Early settlers of the Danebod colony founded a residential school in the Danish tradition of folk high schools and fostered the concept of “learning for living,” by which individuals sought to become enlightened and thoughtful citizens.

Housing

Housing is provided in the Folk School Dormitory and Danebod Lodge, and we can also accommodate campers/trailers and tents with electrical hookups, which allows the camp to accommodate more people. All housing areas listed are close to all activities. There are also some offsite housing options (at your own expense) in town.

Danebod guidelines

All campers must bring their own bed linens, blankets, and towels. Room assignments will be emailed prior to camp start. Upon arrival, room changes typically will not take place, so if you have special requests, please make sure you include them on your registration form.

Folk School Dormitory

The dormitory has rooms with one twin, two twin, double bunk, and full size bed options. Rooms the second and third floors and can only be accessed by stairs. We will attempt to accommodate as many room requests as we can. However, due to the number of rooms available, we may NOT be able to accommodate all requests.

Danebod Lodge

The Danebod Lodge is intended for ADA housing with rooms on the ground floor. Requests for a room in the lodge will be considered as follows:

  1. To be considered for a room in the lodge, requests must be noted on your registration, and must be received with your deposit by the early cutoff date for your specific camp. Requests received after this date will be placed on a waitlist should there be a cancellation before camp. If there are more eligible requests than there are rooms available, rooms assigned will be determined by date registration was received.
  2. Room assignments will be prioritized based on need (i.e. If you have a medical condition that prevents you from doing stairs; are wheelchair reliant). The registration form must be completed indicating your qualifying medical condition.
  3. Full-time campers will have priority over part-time campers.
  4. If you request a room in the Lodge and do not meet these requirements, you may request to be placed on a waitlist and notified before camp, should a room become available.

The camps do everything they can to accommodate as many requests as they can, but due to housing limits, we cannot guarantee accommodating ALL requests. As rooms are assigned, we reserve the option to assign single adults, and also kids age 14 and older (upon request by their parents/guardians) to rooms with other campers of the same age and gender.

Meals

A large kitchen and dining area in the lower level of the Dormitory building provide a perfect setting for group meals and activities. All meals, which include some Danish specialties, are prepared by local cooks.

Due to pre-camp meal planning, special dietary needs and food allergies MUST be requested and noted on your registration form at least three (3) weeks in advance of camp start. The camps will try to accommodate special dietary requests for vegetarian, gluten-free, dairy-free. Please be prepared to bring your own food to substitute for a meal that does not meet your needs.
A Food Liaison is available for support planning food for camp. Tuition costs include all prepared meals, except for local campers who pay per meal.

Young campers

Campers under college age must be accompanied by a parent or adult sponsor. Young people are the responsibility of their parents or sponsors at all times. Babysitting is provided in the dormitory nightly from 8:00 p.m.to midnight. Parents of young children may wish to organize cooperative babysitting at other times.
